Holiness is not something that we do. It is something that God does in us. A saint is a person who is in heaven, it does not matter if that person is St. Peter, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, or our great grandmother. Everyone who gets to heaven is a saint. Therefore, it makes sense then that there are far more people in heaven than just those we know about, than just those who are canonized saints. There are very common and ordinary people with God in heaven. They are saints. Holiness is not something that we do. St. Paul often has very simple but profound exhortations and today's first reading is no exception to this. In his letter the Philippians, St. Paul says, "humbly regard others as more important than yourselves." Imagine our world, our society, our culture if we followed this simple piece of advice. We would truly listen to what others had to say. We would defer to another to go before us in a line. We would be concerned about others well being. The opposite would be true as well. We would be listened to and have a voice. We would be deferred to and others would be concerned about our well being. Charity is very simply defined as loving others, regarding them as worthy of dignity, respect, and attention. ............................................................................................................................................................. San Pablo a menudo tiene exhortaciones muy simples pero profundas y la primera lectura de hoy no es una excepción. En su carta a los filipenses, San Pablo dice: “humildemente consideren a los demás como más importantes que ustedes mismos”. Today I cannot help but think about trees... We have all the fall leaves changing and looking so beautiful. We have Zacchaeus climbing a sycamore tree to get a glimpse of Jesus. I find myself reflecting upon our poor dying bronze birch tree in the center of the circle outside of our parish. It is beyond the ability save and must be replaced, so we are going to replace it with a Magnolia tree that will do a little better in the small circular island. All this tree talk got me thinking about how a tree absorbs nutrients in 2 ways. It drinks deeply from its roots and takes in water, phosphates, nitrates and other minerals from the soil surrounding it and how it draws energy from the sunlight that is collected by its leaves. We are the same. I do not mean that we are planted in the ground and need sunlight; but rather that there are hidden nutrients that we desperately need to survive. The bronze birch died because of a lack of nutrients in the soil. Are we failing to thrive because we are not being fed the right nutrients? Are we struggling because we are not feeding our roots? It is faith, prayer, sacraments, grace, the cultivation of virtues that are most needed in our lives. Yet we spend so much time on other things. We can easily be starving ourselves without realizing until it becomes too late and and our weakened state opens up an avenue for a bigger disease to set in. Till the soil around us with the nutrients of our Faith so that our we will grow strong and healthy and bear much fruit. ............................................................................................................................................................. Hoy no puedo dejar de pensar en los árboles... Tenemos todas las hojas de otoño cambiando y luciendo tan hermosas. Tenemos a Zaqueo trepando a un árbol sicómoro para ver a Jesús. Me encuentro reflexionando sobre nuestro pobre abedul de bronce moribundo en el centro del círculo fuera de nuestra parroquia. Está más allá de la capacidad de guardar y debe ser reemplazado, por lo que lo reemplazaremos con un árbol de Magnolia que funcionará un poco mejor en la pequeña isla circular. Toda esta charla sobre árboles me hizo pensar en cómo un árbol absorbe los nutrientes de 2 maneras. Be humble so that patience may witness to your humility. The virtue of humility is perfected through patience. There is no true humility that is not joined to patience. Blessed Augustine clearly testifies to this, saying, “It is easy to veil our eyes, to wear lowly and loathsome clothing, and to go about with a lowered gaze. Today, we have two major feast days in the church. The first is dedicated to Simon and Jude, the two Apostles. Simon, the zealot, was a political radical at the time of Christ and also an extremely devout man. He would have practiced the Jewish Faith with great compunction and awaited the Messiah with much anxiousness. The zealots were trying very hard to fight against unjust Roman political rule. Jude Thaddeus was said to have been a carpenter like Jesus. He shared a name with Judas Iscariot, both Jude and Judas are English renderings of the same name in Greek. AS a result, it was often said few people prayed for His intercession since his name was so similar to the traitor. Therefore one had to fin themselves pretty desperate to pray asking for his intercession and he became known as the patron of hopeless or lost causes. Both Simon and Jude were martyred together in what is now known as Beruit and they were buried together. The second feast that is celebrated today is the Feast of the Lord of the Miracles (Señor de los Milagros). You only have to step foot in our chapel to get a sense of this devotion with the beautiful grand image of The Lord of the Miracles that is venerated there. Today is the final day of celebrations and tonight we have a Mass at 7:00pm to draw to a conclusion this "purple month" (mes morada) so wonderfully dedicated to Jesus. Join me this evening and give glory to Jesus for the many He has showered down upon us this past year. ............................................................................................................................................................. Hoy tenemos dos grandes días festivos en la iglesia. El primero está dedicado a Simón y Judas, los dos Apóstoles. Simón, el fanático, fue un político radical en la época de Cristo y también un hombre extremadamente devoto. "Draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the Devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens." St. Paul reminds us of the Spiritual warfare that is going on around us and how we must protect ourselvves from harm by abandoning ourselves to God's protection. ............................................................................................................................................................. “Busquen su fortaleza en el Señor y en su invencible poder. Utilicen las armas que Dios les ha dado, para poder resistir a las asechanzas del diablo. Porque no estamos luchando contra fuerzas humanas, sino contra las fuerzas espirituales y sobrehumanas del mal, que dominan y gobiernan este mundo de tinieblas.". San Pablo nos recuerda la guerra espiritual que se desarrolla a nuestro alrededor y cómo debemos protegernos del daño abandonándonos a la protección de Dios.

The Gospel passage for today succinctly conveys my greatest fear. After living my life in service of Our Lord and His people, I fear that I myself will knock at the door of heaven and find myself excluded. I will hear those words, I do not know where you are from... depart from me..." Yikes, a fearful thought. My consolation is that I know that I am not strong enough to get into heaven, that I am not good enough to get into heaven and that I am not worthy of entering heaven. After all our Lord also says... "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough." Behold our salvation is not in ourselves nor our abilities or accomplishments... our salvation is in Jesus Christ, and His merciful love for sinners. ............................................................................................................................................................. El pasaje evangélico de hoy transmite sucintamente mi mayor temor. Después de vivir mi vida al servicio de Nuestro Señor y de su pueblo, temo que yo mismo llamaré a la puerta del cielo y me veré excluido. Escucharé esas palabras, no sé de dónde eres... apártate de mí..." Uy, un pensamiento temeroso. Mi consuelo es que sé que no soy lo suficientemente fuerte para subir al cielo, que soy no soy lo suficientemente bueno para entrar en el cielo y que no soy digno de entrar en el cielo. In today's first reading we encounter one of the most overlooked line in all of Sacred Scripture. St. Paul says, "Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ." Yet despite this clear and strong statement of equality, he is so often charged with a chauvinistic perspective on Marriage. Additionally he is charged with this despite the clear statement that he makes at the end of this passage stating that he is not speaking about marriage, but rather teaching us about the relationship between Christ and His church. St. Paul is using marriage, a very familiar concept, to teach us about the love Christ has for His bride, the Church. "This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the Church." ............................................................................................................................................................. "Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more." These words of Jesus from today's Gospel can leave us confused. The more blessed we are the more we must be ready to use these blessings for the good of others. Whether we are talking about, money, property, virtues, abilities, or talents, when we have been given good gifts then we are expected to use these for the glory of God and the good of others. ............................................................................................................................................................. "Al que mucho se le da, se le exigirá mucho; y al que mucho se le confía, se le exigirá mucho más". Estas palabras de Jesús del Evangelio de hoy pueden dejarnos confundidos. Cuanto más bendecidos seamos, más debemos estar preparados para usar estas bendiciones para el bien de los demás. Ya sea que estemos hablando de dinero, propiedades, virtudes, habilidades o talentos, cuando se nos han dado buenos dones, se espera que los usemos para la gloria de Dios y el bien de los demás.

I find St. Luke fascinating. He was an Evangelist and wrote not only the Gospel according to Luke, but he also wrote Acts of the Apostles. He was a physician by trade and a historian by hobby. He was also known as an artist and he is reported to be the first to paint an icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As amazing as all of these accomplishments are, they are not the real reason that I find St. Luke fascinating. In the first 2 chapters of St. Luke's Gospel, we read the Infancy Narrative. These are the stories of the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Birth of Jesus, the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, and the finding of Jesus in the Temple. St. Luke was a companion of St. Paul and not one of the Apostles. He would not have become a disciple until after the death and resurrection of Jesus. How did he know these stories? Why did he write them down and not the other evangelists? The only explanation that makes sense is that he had the opportunity to sit down and "interview" Mary. He got to sit with her face to face and get her to tall him all these stories. That must have been a truly wonderful experience. I am so jealous of him. I find that I meditate often on what those conversations would have been like. St. Luke, pray for us. ............................................................................................................................................................. Today we celebrate a saint that gives the answer to this question. St. Ignatius of Antioch says, "It is not that I want merely to be called a Christian, but to actually be one. Yes, if I prove to be one, then I can have the name... Come fire, cross, battling with wild beasts, wrenching of bones, mangling of limbs, crushing of my whole body, cruel tortures of the Devil--Only let me get to Jesus Christ!” For Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Christianity means fully conforming oneself to Christ no matter the cost to myself. It is not good enough to simply say that I am a Christian. My actions must prove it. ............................................................................................................................................................. Hoy celebramos a un santo que da respuesta a esta pregunta. San Ignacio de Antioquía dice: "No es que quiera simplemente ser llamado cristiano, sino ser realmente uno. Sí, si demuestro ser uno, entonces puedo tener el nombre... Ven fuego, cruz, luchando con bestias salvajes, desgarramiento de huesos, desgarro de miembros, aplastamiento de todo mi cuerpo, crueles torturas del diablo - ¡Solo déjame llegar a Jesucristo! "But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?" This is the conclusion of Jesus' parable on the necessity of persevering in prayer. Christ's message is quite simple. No matter what, do not lose heart. Stay steady in prayer. Keep asking for what is needed. God loves you and really truly listens. He answers according to His will and not your will, but He desire what is good for you. Will He find you watching and waiting, hoping in Him? ............................................................................................................................................................. “Pero, cuando venga el Hijo del hombre, ¿creen ustedes que encontrará fe sobre la tierra?” Esta es la conclusión de la parábola de Jesús sobre la necesidad de perseverar en la oración. El mensaje de Cristo es bastante simple. Pase lo que pase, no te desanimes. Mantente firme en la oración. Sigue pidiendo lo que se necesita. Dios te ama y realmente te escucha. Él responde según Su voluntad y no la tuya, sino que desea lo que es bueno para ti. ¿Te encontrará velando y esperando, esperando en Él?

Three times, I have had the distinct grace to visit Avila, Spain. In the Monastery of the Incarnation where St. Theresa first entered religious life was one of my favorite and most moving places that I visited. There are so many beautiful little treasures and lessons there. For example, in her writings St. Teresa refers to this statue of Jesus scourged that she would meditate on and that would bring her to tears as she would gaze upon Jesus' wounds from the scourging. I heard that they had the statue at this monastery and could not wait to see it. In my mind this was huge statue in the corner of a room. It turns out to be small wooden statue no bigger than a glass of water. It is remarkably well made and beautiful in its own right, but it dawned on me that it was not the statue that really moved her, it was her love of Jesus that touched her heart. I had made the moment all about the statue and she had let the moment be all about it Jesus. She taught me that day that it is less about the work of art than it is about whom the art has depicted. ........................................................................................................................................................ Tres veces he tenido la gracia distintiva de visitar Ávila, España. En el Monasterio de la Encarnación, donde Santa Teresa ingresó por primera vez a la vida religiosa, fue uno de mis lugares favoritos y más conmovedores que visité. Hay tantos pequeños tesoros hermosos y lecciones allí. Por ejemplo, en sus escritos, Santa Teresa se refiere a esta estatua de Jesús azotado sobre la que meditaba y que la hacía llorar mientras miraba las heridas de Jesús por los azotes. Escuché que tenían la estatua en este monasterio y estaba ansioso por verla. En mi mente, esto era una estatua enorme en la esquina de una habitación. Resulta ser una pequeña estatua de madera no más grande que un vaso de agua. Está muy bien hecho y es hermoso por derecho propio, pero caí en la cuenta de que no era la estatua lo que realmente la conmovía, era su amor por Jesús lo que conmovía su corazón. Yo había hecho del momento todo sobre la estatua y ella había dejado que el momento fuera todo sobre Jesús. Ella me enseñó ese día que se trata menos de la obra de arte que de a quién ha representado el arte.

He was a former slave and who after losing his master's money and getting arrested trying to recover it was eventually able to earn his freedom when working in a silver mine in Sardinia. He was ordained a deacon and became a close friend to Pope Zephyrinus, who named him administrator of the first openly Christian Cemetery in Rome, which still bears the name of St. Callixstus. Upon the death of the pope, Callixtus was elected by a majority vote of all the clergy to become the new pope. His rival for the papacy, a man named Hippolytus, opposed Callixtus so vehemently that he caused a schism and established himself as the first antipope. Hippolytus eventually repented and was reconciled with the Church and both were martyred, first Callixtus in 223 AD, then Hippolytus in 236 AD. Besides the Cemetery in Rome still named after St. Callixtus, he is also known for starting the practice of having Ember Days, or 3 days of prayer of fasting celebrated 4 times a year at the start of the seasons. Though they have fallen out of practice, they used to be days of penance and thanksgiving to God. Era un ex esclavo que, después de perder el dinero de su amo y ser arrestado tratando de recuperarlo, finalmente pudo ganar su libertad cuando trabajaba en una mina de plata en Cerdeña. Fue ordenado diácono y se convirtió en un amigo cercano del Papa Zephyrinus, quien lo nombró administrador del primer cementerio abiertamente cristiano en Roma, que aún lleva el nombre de San Calixto. A la muerte del Papa, Calixto fue elegido por mayoría de votos de todo el clero para convertirse en el nuevo Papa. Su rival por el papado, un hombre llamado Hipólito, se opuso a Calixto con tanta vehemencia que provocó un cisma y se estableció como el primer antipapa. Hipólito finalmente se arrepintió y se reconcilió con la Iglesia y ambos fueron martirizados, primero Calixto en el 223 d.C., luego Hipólito en el 236 d.C. Además del cementerio de Roma que todavía lleva el nombre de San Calixto, también es conocido por iniciar la práctica de tener Días de Brasas, o 3 días de oración de ayuno celebrados 4 veces al año al comienzo de las estaciones. In Peru, the largest Feast Day, not including Christmas and Holy Week and Easter of course, is the Feast of the Lord of the Miracles (Senor de los Milagros). The entire month of October is set aside for prayer and devotions seeking our Lord's intercession and the largest Catholic Procession in the world numbering more than 400,000 people takes place in Lima every year. You only have to step foot in our chapel to get a sense of this devotion with the beautiful grand image of The Lord of the Miracles that is venerated there. Today we will be celebrating a 12:00pm Mass in Spanish followed by a procession of the Image of the Lord of the Miracles. The procession should last from 1:00pm-3:00pm. Blessed Mary Rose Durocher is a very impressive young woman. She was the youngest of 10 children. In her early teens she began her life long practice of almost daily visiting the sick and caring for the poor in the city. In her early teens she began to desire to be a religious sister, but at 18 her mother passed away. She took care of the household and of her father for the next 12 years. Never forgetting her dream, she made plans to enter a congregation of sisters coming from Marseilles but at the last minute the sisters decided not to come. At about 32 years old, the bishop asked her to found a community of nuns herself. She began the Sisters of the Holy names of Jesus and Mary. She established them to be a teaching order dedicated to the free education of children. Within one year she had a convent and a boarding school with 12 sisters; within 6 years she had established 4 convents and schools and had over 44 sisters. She died at a young age of only 38, but her legacy lived on. Just 20 years after founding the order, they had over 275 convents all over the world. O Lord, You enkindled in the heart of Blessed Marie Rose Durocher the flame of an ardent charity and a burning desire to collaborate, as a teacher, in the mission of the Church. Inspire our hearts with that same charity so that we may lead our brothers and sisters to the bliss of eternal life. En su adolescencia comenzó la práctica de toda su vida de visitar a los enfermos y cuidar a los pobres de la ciudad casi a diario. En su adolescencia comenzó a desear ser una hermana religiosa, pero a los 18 años su madre falleció. Cuidó de la casa y de su padre durante los siguientes 12 años. Sin olvidar nunca su sueño, hizo planes para entrar en una congregación de hermanas que venían de Marsella, pero en el último momento las hermanas decidieron no venir. Aproximadamente a los 32 años, el obispo le pidió que fundara ella misma una comunidad de monjas. Ella comenzó las Hermanas de los Santos Nombres de Jesús y María. Los estableció como una orden de enseñanza dedicada a la educación gratuita de los niños. En un año tenía un convento y un internado con 12 hermanas; en 6 años había establecido 4 conventos y escuelas y tenía más de 44 hermanas. Murió a la temprana edad de solo 38 años, pero su legado perduró. Apenas 20 años después de fundar la orden, tenían más de 275 conventos en todo el mundo.
