I find it hard to believe that it is already the Year of the Lord 2022. The past 2 years have been ones for the history books. I am glad though that the Church gives us this amazing Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God to bring in the New Year. We all need the care and order that a mother brings to our lives. The Blessed Mother is no different. Our gospel today tells us "And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart." Mary reflected upon the mysteries that were taking place before her. She considered what these mysteries meant for her and for the world. She prayed and guarded these ideas within her heart. We too must take this approach to the world we live in. We should like Mary look for the path of good, light and peace in the midst of darkness and sorrow. We must leave room for God to touch us with His presence and inspire us with His love. Most of all, we must pray. We must pray that God's will is done in all things and that all things will find their origin and fulfillment in Him. Merry Christmas. On this last day of the year, the Church gives us St. John's comforting hymn of hope to reflect upon. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." (John 1:1-5) Jesus Christ is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega. He is coeternal with the Father yet became Man and took on the flesh of our humanity. He is invisible who became visible, and the Light from which all evil is dispelled. Jesus Christ is the answer to every question, solution to every problem and is the Hope of all in need. Without Jesus there is nothing, and with Him nothing else matters. As we conclude the Year of the Lord 2021, may Jesus Christ reign now and forever... for Jesus Christ is Lord! Merry Christmas. We are on the 5th day of the Octave of Christmas, but today we also are reminded once again of martyrdom. On Dec. 26 we celebrated the martyrdom of St. Stephen, on Dec. 28 we commemorated all the innocents who were slaughtered by Herod and today we are celebrating St. Thomas Becket. He was the Archbishop of Canterbury and Chancellor of England. Though Thomas Becket was elevated to the position of Chancellor as a loyal man to the King, he was then ordained a priest and consecrated a bishop. From that point on Becket was a loyal man of God. When given a choice between being Loyal to God or the king, Becket chose God and resigned his position as Chancellor of England. He continued to serve as Archbishop of Canterbury. Eventually his opposition to the king's desire to control the clergy and the Church led to several showdowns of power between the King and the Church leading to Becket's exile, his return to England and his eventual death. On Dec. 29, 1170, four knights acting on what they considered to be will of King Henry II, entered the Cathedral of Canterbury and savagely murdered Thomas Becket inside the Cathedral itself while the other monks were praying vespers. He was canonized just 3 years later as a martyr for his willingness to die rather than forsake the promises He made to Christ and his Church on ordination day. ............................................................................................................................................................. "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb." These words of Elizabeth we say everyday and multiple times each day. The echo of these words fills our minds with a realization of Mary's unique and important role in the life of Christ. Mary, a faithful young woman, called by God to be the Mother of the Messiah. I imagine that she was overwhelmed, a little uncertain and possibly even intimidated to be placed in charge of the Infant Prince of Peace. Mary only knew one way to do all that was asked of her. She knew that humility was the answer. She knew her lowly origins, she knew her gifts and talents and limitations and weaknesses. She knew that she could not do any of this on her own. Mary knew exactly what she was being asked and who Jesus would be. She said yes, not with the arrogance of pride and self aggrandizing, but rather the confidence born of Faith. So after Elizabeth's greeting, Mary rejoiced, not in her good fortune, nor in the amazing role that she would play for humanity. No. Mary rejoiced in the blessing of a God who keeps His promise to send His Redeemer into the world to save us.Blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus! ............................................................................................................................................................. Incluso nuestras preguntas reticentes, aquellas que quedan en el fondo de nuestro corazón, que nos da vergüenza expresar: el Padre las escucha y desea darnos el Espíritu Santo, que inspira cada oración y todo lo transforma. Hermanos y hermanas, en la oración siempre hay una cuestión de paciencia, siempre, de apoyar la espera. Ahora estamos en el tiempo de Adviento, un tiempo típicamente esperado; de expectativa de Navidad. Estamos esperando. Esto es evidente. Pero toda nuestra vida también está a la espera. Y la oración está siempre a la espera, porque sabemos que el Señor responderá ”. Papa Francisco

Did John the Baptist doubt at the end of his life? While imprisoned and seemingly near the end of his days, John the Baptist sends his disciples to Jesus to ask Him, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?" Remember that John leapt in his mother's womb at the close proximity with Jesus. They were cousins and John likely grew up hearing stories about Mary and Joseph and Jesus from his mother Elizabeth. John preached the coming of the Messiah and pointed Him out as being Jesus both before and after Jesus' Baptism. John who baptized Jesus and was present when the voice from heaven declared Him to be His Beloved Son. Do we really believe that this same John became impatient or worse doubted while imprisoned and near death? No. John the Baptist did not doubt. He is certain that Jesus is the long awaited for Messiah. But John also knows that he is close to death and it is time to help his disciples to transfer to becoming Christ's disciples. So he sends his own disciples to Jesus so that they may hear and see that Jesus fulfills the prophecies of the messiah so that they too may fully believe. He is now fading away into the background and Jesus will now come to the foreground. ............................................................................................................................................................. ¿Dudó Juan el Bautista al final de su vida? St. John of the Cross has writings and letters filled with beautiful imagery and analogies. He often has just the perfect way of describing profound truths about our interior life. On of my favorites is this simple way of describing how important it is not be possessed by material things and to be too caught up worldly thinking, which is a lesson that is very important as we get closer to Christmas. "The soul that is attached to anything however much good there may be in it, will not arrive at the liberty of divine union. For whether it be a strong wire rope or a slender and delicate thread that holds the bird, it matters not, if it really holds it fast; for, until the cord be broken the bird cannot fly."-St. John of the Cross ............................................................................................................................................................. San Juan de la Cruz tiene escritos y cartas llenos de bellas imágenes y analogías. A menudo tiene la manera perfecta de describir verdades profundas sobre nuestra vida interior. Our reading from numbers today, tells us of the star that will announce the coming of the messiah. " I see him, though not now; I behold him, though not near: A star shall advance from Jacob, and a staff shall rise from Israel." Come, O Star of Bethlehem, whose appearance brings all hope who live in a world of darkness.
