Our world loves supercheros. In fact last night you probably could see many kids dressed up as their favorite superhero. The problem is that as good as some of these superhero stories are, they all are lacking. Every single one is fiction. They are not real. But our lives are filled with real heroes. Yes, there are the everyday men and women who put themselves in harms way and make great sacrifices for others, but that is not even whom I am speaking. I am referring to the saints. they are the real heroes, They are not made up or fiction, they lived heroic live and they are wonderful role models to look up to... the saints are nothin short of awesome. Today join me in celebrating that amazing group of heroic witnesses who gone before us and are already enjoying the delights of Heaven, Through their witness and intercession, may we join them there! ............................................................................................................................................................. "Sh'ma Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Eḥad" ("Hear, O Israel: the LORD is our God, the LORD is One.") This is the first line of the most well known Hebrew prayer. It is recited at least twice a day by all Jews. The first verse of the prayer is taken from Deuteronomy 6:4-9. This first line summarizes the most important teneent of all of Judiasm that there is One God and only one God monotheism, as contrasted by all other world religions at the time that taught there were many gods, polytheism. "Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words which I command you today shall be upon your heart. You shall teach them thoroughly to your children, and you shall speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road, when you lie down and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for a reminder between your eyes. And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and upon your gates." ............................................................................................................................................................. Today, we have two major feast days in the church. The first is dedicated to Simon and Jude, the two Apostles. Simon, the zealot, was a political radical at the time of Christ and also an extremely devout man. He would have practiced the Jewish Faith with great compunction and awaited the Messiah with much anxiousness. The zealots were trying very hard to fight against unjust Roman political rule. Jude Thaddeus was said to have been a carpenter like Jesus. He shared a name with Judas Iscariot, both Jude and Judas are English renderings of the same name in Greek. AS a result, it was often said few people prayed for His intercession since his name was so similar to the traitor. Therefore one had to fin themselves pretty desperate to pray asking for his intercession and he became known as the patron of hopeless or lost causes. Both Simon and Jude were martyred together in what is now known as Beruit and they were buried together. The second feast that is celebrated today is the Feast of the Lord of the Miracles (Señor de los Milagros). In Peru, this feast days, has the largest Catholic Procession in the world, with more than 400,000 participants. WE are very blessed to have a beautiful icon of the Lord of the Miracles in our chapel and tonight we will have a special Spanish mass at 8:00pm. St. Paul's letter to the Romans is amazing. I feel like every verse of todays reading is deeply profound and that I could spend hours reflecting upon it. He starts out reminding us that the Holy Spirit the sanctifier, who reminds of all Christ has taught us also will "teach us how to pray" and even more so will pray in us. Ultimately when Christ searches our hearts, He will encounter the Spirit there. All of this can be interpreted as saying that when we let the Holy Spirit in, then it is the very Spirit Himself who will act in us and it is the Holy Spirit who will connect us to Christ our savior. WE do not have to do anything other than permit the Spirit to act on our behalf before Christ. Wow, and this was just the 1st 2 verses of our reading today. ............................................................................................................................................................. "I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us." This statement from St. Paul to the Romans is filled with faith and hope. It is a reminder to us that suffering is temporary. As we approach halloween, I think of the analogy of walking through a dark and scary forest. We just need to put our head down and just look at feet put one foot in front of the other, and take one step at a time... before we know it we are out of the forest and into the glenn and all is safe again. Life has many things that can potentially overwhelm us, that certainly cause us harm... but one day at time keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and we will find ourselves through the challenging times and we will be with God forever. ............................................................................................................................................................. St. Paul invites us to day to call out to God using the terms, "Abba Father!" When both Jesus and St. Paul teaches to call God "Abba" they are teaching us something very special about Christ's relationship with the Father and ultimately our relationship to the Father. The term "Abba" does not mean Daddy or Papa. It is however filled with the intimacy of a relationship in which we are admitting that God has our interests in mind and that we are in a intimate relationship with Him where it is through Him we find our existence our life, … well we find everything. It is a very special term that is filled with respect, reverence and with a special familial relationship. St. Paul is reminding us that we have become God's Children and God listens and care for us as true sons and daughters. ............................................................................................................................................................. Cuando tanto Jesús como San Pablo enseñan a llamar a Dios "Abba", nos están enseñando algo muy especial sobre la relación de Cristo con el Padre y, en última instancia, nuestra relación con el Padre. El término "Abba" no significa papá o papi. Today we hear the story of healing of Bartimaeus, who was blind. If you remember, Bartimaeus was begging and heard that Jesus was passing by. He ceaselessly called out to him, "Son of David, have pity on me." He kept calling out even though people around tried to quiet him. Jesus eventually called him over and healed him. Bartimaeus encourages me deeply... 1) Go to where Jesus is and be persistent in calling on Him for help. 2) Do not be dissuaded by others around or the world who will play games with you and tell you to be quiet. 3) be ready when He does call you Jesus will ask you like He asked Bartimaeus, "What do you want me to do for you?" Be prepared to ask for exactly what you want from Jesus. ............................................................................................................................................................. St. John of Capistrano had an easy and comfortable life. He was bright, energetic, and successful. John had studied law and was the mayor of Perugia, an important Italian city; but then war came. He was captured and imprisonment changed John of Capistrano forever. Being confined to the four walls of a prison made him realize how precious was the life that God had given him and how sad it was to waste it on frivolities. After his release from imprisonment, John chose to enter the Religious life and give up the life of riches that he had already experienced. This decision was not an escape from real life, but rather a mature decision to focus on only that which was most important. In a shocking display of humility after giving his life to Christ, John mounted a donkey backwards and rode through the streets of his town wearing only a list of his worst sins. People ridiculed him and pelted him with mud and dung. In this state, he presented himself at the door of a Franciscan monastery to seek admission. He was immediately accepted. After studies, he was ordained a priest in 1421. John’s well of humility had no bottom, and his physical austerities never ceased. He continually mortified himself. He fasted, went barefoot, and slept little throughout his life. He was a student of the great Saint Bernard of Siena, a fellow Franciscan. Like Bernard, John became a renowned preacher and traveled throughout Central and Northern Europe drawing vast crowds. St. John of Capistrano, pray for us. ............................................................................................................................................................. In today's passage from the letter to the Romans, St. Paul reminds us that sin should not define us. He specifically says, "The willing is ready at hand, but doing the good is not. For I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me." Our sin does not define us. It is not who we really are. Typically, we sin because we are weak, not because we are evil. ............................................................................................................................................................. "Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division." Is Jesus telling us not to be peacemakers? NO. He is telling us that following Him will be hard and the world will hate us for loving Christ, but we are not called to do anything but love others. We must reject the world but not the people in the world. We must not become a slave to the World but we are to be servants to others. We should not be the cause of these divisions rather world's rejection of Christ is what is the source of all division. ............................................................................................................................................................. This evening we welcome to Christ the Redeemer, Bishop Loverde, the Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Arlington. He is coming to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on 96 of the young men and women of our Parish. I am so excited for them to receive this amazing sacrament. The Holy Spirit will come upon them in a new way and will fill them with His grace and His gifts. I find St. Luke fascinating. He was an Evangelist and wrote not only the Gospel according to Luke, but he also wrote Acts of the Apostles. He was a physician by trade and a historian by hobby. He was also known as an artist and he is reported to be the first to paint an icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As amazing as all of these accomplishments are, they are not the real reason that I find St. Luke fascinating. In the first 2 chapters of St. Luke's Gospel, we read the Infancy Narrative. These are the stories of the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Birth of Jesus, the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, and the finding of Jesus in the Temple. St. Luke was a companion of St. Paul and not one of the Apostles. He would not have become a disciple until after the death and resurrection of Jesus. How did he know these stories? Why did her write them down and not the other evangelists? The only explanation that makes sense is that he had the opportunity to sit down and "interview" Mary. He got to sit with her face to face and get her to tall him all these stories. That must have been a truly wonderful experience. I am so jealous of him. I find that I meditate often on what those conversations would have been like. St. Luke, pray for us. ............................................................................................................................................................. (This weekend at mass please take the time to welcome Fr. Juan Puigbo to Christ the Redeemer. Bishop Burbidge assigned him on Thursday to join our team and he is excited to get to know all his new parishioners. Fr. Moretti and I are grateful for his help!) ... Today's Gospel passage is a great example of prayer. How many times like James and John we find ourselves asking God for something that He does not want for us. Jesus meets their request with gentleness and he corrects them with kindness. He does not make-the example out of them but rather he listens to them and refocuses their request in the correct direction It is only when the rest of the Apostles become indignant that Jesus firmly and persuasively teaches His Apostles that leaders are to be servants and not be the kind of leader that only is out for their own self interests. This passage encourages me. It teaches me that like James and John we should pray with sincerity, be comfortable enough with Jesus to tell him what you really are thinking. At the same time though, this passages teaches me not to be surprised at Jesus response to my requests. He will often take our thoughts and requests in an entirely different direction. Finally of course, the passage teaches me that true leaders are not self-serving but rather sacrifice themselves in the service of others. ............................................................................................................................................................. Jesús responde a su pedido con gentileza y los corrige con amabilidad. Él no hace de ellos el ejemplo, sino que los escucha y reorienta su pedido en la dirección correcta. Sólo cuando el resto de los Apóstoles se indignan, Jesús les enseña con firmeza y persuasión a Sus Apóstoles que los líderes deben ser siervos y no ser el tipo de líder que solo busca sus propios intereses. Este pasaje me anima. Me enseña que, como Santiago y Juan, debemos orar con sinceridad, sentirnos lo suficientemente cómodos con Jesús para decirle lo que realmente estás pensando. Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, este pasaje me enseña a no sorprenderme de la respuesta de Jesús a mis pedidos. A menudo, tomará nuestros pensamientos y peticiones en una dirección completamente diferente. I think back very fondly to my visits to Avila, Spain. It was incredibly inspiring to see where St. Theresa grew up, entered the monastery, lived, prayed and was a force of reform and renewal of her order and of the Church. The more time I spent walking the streets of this humble town, the more a simple but profound peace grew in my heart. I found myself imagining her praying to God in these different locations and I could not help but grow in my devotion to her. It was most often the ordinary everyday things that I saw that helped me to imagine her life better. It seemed like everywhere that I looked God was there awaiting my attention and when I would notice Him, He would simply smile back wordlessly saying, "Yes, I have been here all along. I will wait for you for as long as it takes." This reminds me of a something that St. Therese would say, "How often I failed in my duty to God, because I was not leaning the strong pillar of prayer." ............................................................................................................................................................. Fue increíblemente inspirador ver dónde creció Santa Teresa, entró en el monasterio, vivió, oró y fue una fuerza de reforma y renovación de su orden y de la Iglesia. Cuanto más tiempo pasaba caminando por las calles de esta humilde ciudad, más simple pero profunda crecía la paz en mi corazón. Me encontré imaginándola rezando a Dios en estos diferentes lugares y no pude evitar crecer en mi devoción por ella. La mayoría de las veces, eran las cosas cotidianas que veía las que me ayudaban a imaginar mejor su vida. Parecía que en todas partes donde miraba, Dios estaba esperando mi atención y cuando lo notaba, simplemente me devolvía la sonrisa sin palabras y decía: "Sí, he estado aquí todo el tiempo. Te esperaré todo el tiempo que sea necesario". Esto me recuerda algo que diría Santa Teresa: "Cuán a menudo no cumplí con mi deber para con Dios, porque no me apoyaba en el pilar fuerte de la oración".

St. Paul says in today's excerpt from his letter to the Romans, "By your stubbornness and impenitent heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself for the day of wrath and revelation of the just judgment of God, who will repay everyone according to his works, eternal life to those who seek glory, honor, and immortality through perseverance in good works, but wrath and fury to those who selfishly disobey the truth and obey wickedness." Faith demands works. “Whoever believes in Him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.” (Jn 3:18) Believing does not mean passively accepting a set of truths without concrete implications for our particular life. In the words of St. James, “faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead” (Jas 2:17). Those who believe must draw up a plan for Christian life in order to imitate Our Lord, adapting their mentality, intelligence, will and sensibilities to Him, constantly seeking to progress in this union. ............................................................................................................................................................. (Juan 3:18) Creer no significa aceptar pasivamente un conjunto de verdades sin implicaciones concretas para nuestra vida particular. En palabras de Santiago, “la fe en sí misma, si no tiene obras, está muerta” (Santiago 2, 17). El creyente debe trazar un plan de vida cristiana para imitar a Nuestro Señor, adaptando a Él su mentalidad, inteligencia, voluntad y sensibilidad, buscando constantemente progresar en esta unión.
