In our reading from Genesis this morning, God gives Adam and Eve a very real and free choice to follow the Will of God or to reject HIs will and as a result reject Him. "You are free to eat from any of the trees of the garden except the tree of knowledge of good and evil. From that tree you shall not eat; the moment you eat from it you are surely doomed to die." This is not so much of a test as much as it is the means of having freedom. We must have freedom to make a real choice for the good. St. Augustine explains this beautifully when he wrote, “Without true freedom, the universe is just a divine puppet show. If there is to be any real creaturely goodness, any new and creative act of love, rather than the merely mechanical uncoiling of a wind-up universe, if there are to be any real decisions other than those made in the divine will, then there must be true freedom, and such freedom brings with it the possibility of evil as well as the promise of goodness.” ............................................................................................................................................................. En nuestra lectura del Génesis de esta mañana, Dios da a Adán y Eva una elección muy real y libre de seguir la Voluntad de Dios o rechazar Su voluntad y, como resultado, rechazarlo a Él. “Puedes comer de todos los árboles del jardín; pero del árbol del conocimiento del bien y del mal te mando que no comas, porque el día en que comas de él, morirás sin remedio”. Esto no es tanto una prueba como un medio para tener libertad. Debemos tener libertad para hacer una elección real por el bien. San Agustín lo explica hermosamente cuando escribió: “Sin verdadera libertad, el universo es solo un teatro de marionetas divino. Si ha de haber alguna bondad real de las criaturas, algún acto nuevo y creativo de amor, en lugar del mero desenrollado mecánico de un universo que se da cuerda, si ha de haber alguna decisión real que no sea la que se toma por voluntad divina, entonces debe haber verdadera libertad, y esa libertad trae consigo la posibilidad del mal, así como la promesa del bien”.
