Today's Gospel recounts the story of Zacchaeus. He has always been one of my favorite persons in the New Testament. I find it almost comical that I identify so much with Zacchaeus. He was short of stature and I am not short by any definition. Yet he intrigues me for many reasons, like his deep desire to see and encounter Jesus; the yearning to know Him even if just a glimpse; his creative solution to run ahead and climb the tree so he can be satisfied. In so many ways when I was searching for my own vocation and trying to find my way in this world, I felt very much like Zacchaeus. To have Jesus stop beneath the tree and look up at him, call him down and then choose to stay with him... it feels like a huge victory. I find myself rejoicing with Zacchaeus at being noticed and called. May we all have a little bit of of Zacchaeus' curiosity in each of us. May we long to see Jesus and find creative ways to encounter Him personally and may we respond as readily and generously when our Lord stops before us and calls us to come down. ............................................................................................................................................................. El Evangelio de hoy cuenta la historia de Zaqueo. Siempre ha sido una de mis personas favoritas del Nuevo Testamento. Me parece casi cómico que me identifique tanto con él. Era de baja estatura y yo no soy baja de estatura en ningún sentido. Sin embargo, me intriga por muchas razones, como su profundo deseo de ver y encontrarse con Jesús; el anhelo de conocerlo aunque sea solo de pasada; su solución creativa de correr hacia adelante y trepar al árbol para poder sentirse satisfecho. En muchos sentidos, cuando buscaba mi propia vocación y trataba de encontrar mi camino en este mundo, me sentí muy parecido a Zaqueo. Que Jesús se detuviera debajo del árbol y lo mirara, lo llamara y luego decidiera quedarse con él... se siente como una gran victoria. Me encuentro regocijándome con Zaqueo por ser notado y llamado. Ojalá todos tengamos un poco de la curiosidad de Zaqueo en cada uno de nosotros. Que podamos anhelar ver a Jesús y encontrar maneras creativas de encontrarnos con Él personalmente y que podamos responder con la misma prontitud y generosidad cuando nuestro Señor se detenga ante nosotros y nos llame a descender.
