Merry Christmas. Today we continue to celebrate the Birth of our Lord as we are with in the Octave of Christmas; however we are also celebrating today Dec. 26 the Feast Day of St. Stephen the first Martyr. What a sobering reminder of what it means to follow this Christ Child. Though we are obviously filled with the joy of the birth of Jesus, we also must not forget who this child really is... “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted..." (Luke 2:34). It is indeed a sobering thought to realize this harmless litle infant prince of peace laying in a wooden manger is the same man of whom the crowds will shout to crucify and the Roman will lay on the wood of the cross. St. Stephen's day is celebration of the first martyr for Christ but also a reminder to us Christians that Christmas is about much more than a serene manger scene. ............................................................................................................................................................. Hoy seguimos celebrando el Nacimiento de Nuestro Señor como estamos en la Octava de Navidad; sin embargo, también estamos celebrando hoy 26 de diciembre la fiesta de San Esteban, el primer mártir. Qué recordatorio tan aleccionador de lo que significa seguir a este Niño Jesús. Aunque obviamente estamos llenos del gozo del nacimiento de Jesús, tampoco debemos olvidar quién es realmente este niño... “Este niño será causa de caída y de elevación para muchos en Israel; será signo de contradicción..." (Lucas 2:34). Es realmente un pensamiento aleccionador darse cuenta de que este inofensivo infante pequeño príncipe de paz acostado en un pesebre de madera es el mismo hombre de quien las multitudes gritarán para crucificar y el romano se acostará en el madera de la cruz El día de San Esteban es la celebración del primer mártir de Cristo, pero también un recordatorio para nosotros los cristianos de que la Navidad es mucho más que un pesebre sereno.
