"Berit" is a Hebrew word that means "covenant". The Old Testament is filled with God making covenants with man. A covenant is best defined as a sacred familial bond. It is a Bond because it is a permenant union between two parties. It is Familial because it makes the parties kin. It is Sacred because it is entered into with a formal rite before God with a solemn oath. The most notable covenants in the Old Testament are the covenants between God and Adam, God and Noah, God and Abraham, and God and Moses. The Old Testament is filled with smaller covenants as well. It is this context of Covenant that we read about Marriage in our first reading from Genesis and the Gospel Passage in Mark. Man leaves father adn mother adn clings to wife, the two becoem one flesh.. what God has put togehter no human being can seperate. This is a covenant. Marriage was never intended to be simple commitment, nor human contract, rather from the beginning in Genesis it took on the character of being a covenant. A solemn and sacred oath uniting in an indissoluble bond one man and one woman for the rest of their lives that makes them kin. ............................................................................................................................................................. "Berit" es una palabra hebrea que significa "pacto o alianza". El Antiguo Testamento está lleno de pactos que Dios hace con el hombre. Un pacto se define mejor como un vínculo familiar sagrado. Es un Vínculo porque es una unión permanente entre dos partes. Es Familiar porque convierte a las partes en parientes. Es Sagrado porque se celebra con un rito formal ante Dios con un juramento solemne. Los pactos más notables del Antiguo Testamento son los Pactos entre Dios y Adán, Dios y Noé, Dios y Abraham, y Dios y Moisés. El Antiguo Testamento también está lleno de pactos más pequeños. Es este contexto de pacto que leemos sobre el matrimonio en nuestra primera lectura del Génesis y el pasaje del Evangelio en Marcos. El hombre deja a su padre y a su madre y se aferra a su esposa, los dos se convierten en una sola carne... lo que Dios ha unido ningún ser humano puede separarlo. Esto es un pacto. El matrimonio nunca tuvo la intención de ser un simple acuerdo, ni un contrato humano, sino que desde el principio en Génesis asumió el carácter de ser un pacto. Un juramento solemne y sagrado que une en un vínculo indisoluble a un hombre y una mujer por el resto de sus vidas y los convierte en parientes.
