On the Feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, I am always inspired by this woman Today is the Feast day of the co-patron of the diocese, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. She is the first American born Saint. She was Anglican and had to travel to Italy because her husband was sick and needed a better climate than New York to convalesce. In Italy they were detained in quarantine for over a month for fear of Yellow fever where her husband eventually passed away. Elizabeth stayed in Italy for a little over a year before and stayed with friends who were Catholic. She would attend Mass daily in their private chapel with the family and neighbors. Seeing their devotion and reverence for the Eucharist led Elizabeth to a profound faith in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. After her return to New York, Elizabeth took instructions in the Catholic Faith and converted to Catholicism. She was ostracized by her protestant friends and looked at with suspicion by any Catholics she encountered because she was a convert. She eventually moved to Baltimore and finally settled in Emmitsburg where a new Catholic community was just getting established. She founded a free school for girls and founded a religious order for women called the Daughters of Charity of St. Joseph. This order was the first religious order for women founded in the united states and the school was the first free Catholic school in the United States. I am deeply inspired by her sense justice for the poor and underserved, especially her dedication to eh education of the women who joined her order and the education of the girls they served. I am also inspired by her resolute belief in the Holy Eucharist and her willingness to be come Catholic and receive communion no matter the personal toll that it took on her.
