St. Margaret of Scotland grew up in a very religious household and environment in the middle of the 11th Century in Hungary. Through round about situations and wars she eventually found herself in with her family in Scotland under the protection of King Malcolm III, who she was to eventually wed. They had 8 children. As Queen of Scotland she lost none of her piety and in fact increased her love and care of the poor. She had a calming and civilizing influence upon her husband and would often read bible stories to him in the evenings. She would begin every day by serving food to the orphans and to the poor before she would eat anything herself. She would wash the feet of the pilgrims and the poor who gather around the gates so that she could be more like Christ, who washed the feet of his disciples. She encouraged the formation of Benedictine Abbeys and would daily attend the midnight services with the monks. She spent much of her other free time in prayer, doing devotional reading and embroidery for vestments and altar cloths. She was a queen, a wife, a mother, a philanthropist, and a missionary all rolled into one. She had all the characteristics of a strong modern woman, yet she died on Nov. 16, 1093 at just 50 years old. What an amazing witness of the Faith for us.
