Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Blaise as well as the Feast day of Our Lady of Suyapa, the patron of Honduras. Tonight we will conclude our Novena to Our Lady of Suyapa at 6:00pm with Mass at 7:00pm and reception afterwards. We will also have the blessing of the throats after both of our daily masses today.) St. Blaise was a bishop and a martyr from the early 4th century. He was a physician and over time sensed the call to give his life fully to God and enter the monastery where he would become a physician of souls. He was well known for his ability to heal. During the persecution of Diocletian in 316 Blaise was arrested and brought to trial for being a Christian. On the way a woman brought to Blaise her child who was choking on a fishbone and had turned a pale blue hue and was not breathing. He healed the child. He was imprisoned, tortured and eventually beheaded. While he was in prison it is said that woman brought him two small candle sticks so that he could be comforted by the light. As a result we impart a special blessing on the Feast day of St. Blaise where holding two unlit tapers crossed, we bless the throats of the faithful saying: "Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and Martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (Hoy celebramos la fiesta de San Blas, así como la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Suyapa, la patrona de Honduras. Esta noche concluiremos nuestra Novena a Nuestra Señora de Suyapa a las 6:00pm con la Misa a las 7:00pm y la recepción después. También tendremos la bendición de las gargantas después de nuestras dos misas diarias de hoy.) San Blas fue un obispo y mártir de principios del siglo IV. Era médico y con el tiempo sintió el llamado a entregar su vida completamente a Dios y entrar en el monasterio donde se convertiría en médico de almas. Era bien conocido por su capacidad para curar. Durante la persecución de Diocleciano en 316, Blas fue arrestado y llevado a juicio por ser cristiano. En el camino, una mujer le llevó a Blas a su hijo que se estaba ahogando con una espina de pescado y se había vuelto de un tono azul pálido y no respiraba. Él curó al niño. Fue encarcelado, torturado y finalmente decapitado. Se dice que mientras estaba en prisión, una mujer le trajo dos pequeños candelabros para que pudiera consolarse con la luz. Por eso impartimos una bendición especial el día de la festividad de San Blas donde, sosteniendo dos velas apagadas cruzadas, bendecimos las gargantas de los fieles diciendo: "Por la intercesión de San Blas, obispo y mártir, que Dios los libere de toda enfermedad de la garganta y de cualquier otra enfermedad: en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Amén".
