There is an incident in the life of St Bernard of Clairvaux that truly fascinates me. In 1145 Pope Lucias II was killed in an attack on Rome. The college of Cardinal's already assembled and present immediately sought to vote a new successor and chose Bernardo of Pisa a former student and friend of St. Bernard. St. Bernard strenuously opposed this election and remonstrated the cardinals for their choice. Despite his feelings, this saintly man never-the-less knew that Bernardo, no w Pope Eugene III, was really and truly the successor of Peter and the Holy Father, therefore he set to work, supporting, educating and encouraging his former pupil. We wrote a beautiful work called, "Five books on Consideration" that exhorted Pope Eugene III with some of the most wonderful advice that can be given anyone in a role of leadership. St. Bernard must have been a phenomenal teacher because Pope Eugene II was known for his affability and generosity and eventually was beatified and is now venerated as Pope Blessed Eugene III. This story in the life of St. Bernard is a reminder to me in how to embrace adversity. It is alright to take a second and complain about it; but then stop your complaining and do something to better the situation. ............................................................................................................................................................. San Bernardo se opuso enérgicamente a esta elección y recriminó a los cardenales por su elección. A pesar de sus sentimientos, este santo hombre sabía sin embargo que Bernardo, ahora Papa Eugenio III, era real y verdaderamente el sucesor de Pedro y del Santo Padre, por eso se puso a trabajar, apoyando, educando y alentando a su antiguo alumno. Escribimos una hermosa obra titulada "Cinco libros sobre la consideración" que exhortaba al Papa Eugenio III con algunos de los consejos más maravillosos que se pueden dar a cualquiera en un papel de liderazgo. San Bernardo debe haber sido un maestro fenomenal porque el Papa Eugenio II era conocido por su afabilidad y generosidad y finalmente fue beatificado y ahora es venerado como el Papa Beato Eugenio III. Esta historia en la vida de San Bernardo me recuerda cómo afrontar la adversidad. Está bien tomarse un segundo y quejarse; pero luego deje de quejarse y haga algo para mejorar la situación.
