In Today's Gospel, the Pharisees ask Jesus, "which commandment is the greatest?" This question is a trap since all commandments must be equally observed. Jesus responds with an organizing principle of the commandments rather than choosing one in particular. Jesus said, the greatest is to Love God with all your heart, soul and mind. This is not a new teaching Jesus is quoting Deuteronomy 6:5. Though He could have just stopped there, Jesus continues to teach something that was not asked for, the second greatest commandment. He said the second is like it, "love your neighbor as yourself." Again Jesus in not teaching anything new, he is directly quoting Leviticus 19:18.As simple as this teaching is, there is a catch. The mandate to love God and neighbor is obvious, but the instruction from Leviticus to love others as we love ourselves seems strange to modern ears. Love of self seems like a negative, almost as if it is narcistic or self indulgent. Christ is not referring to a self-centered egotistical kind of self loving that our world often points to as the pursuit of me time and of pleasure or comfort. Christ instead is referring to the realization that we are loveable, that there is dignity in us, as we have been created to be like God in His image. Therefore, we must come to realize that God loves us, and he does not make mistakes. As we are loved, then so to shall we love others. ............................................................................................................................................................. En el Evangelio de hoy, los fariseos le preguntan a Jesús: "¿Qué mandamiento es el mayor?" Esta pregunta es una trampa ya que todos los mandamientos deben observarse por igual. Jesús responde con un principio organizador de los mandamientos en lugar de elegir uno en particular. Jesús dijo, lo más grande es amar a Dios con todo tu corazón, alma y mente. Esta no es una nueva enseñanza que Jesús está citando a Deuteronomio 6: 5. Aunque podría haberse detenido allí, Jesús continúa enseñando algo que no se le pidió, el segundo mandamiento más importante. Dijo que el segundo es parecido, "ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo". Nuevamente, Jesús, al no enseñar nada nuevo, está citando directamente Levítico 19:18. Tan simple como es esta enseñanza, hay una trampa. El mandato de amar a Dios y al prójimo es obvio, pero la instrucción de Levítico de amar a los demás como nos amamos a nosotros mismos parece extraña para los oídos modernos. El amor a uno mismo parece algo negativo, casi como si fuera narcista o autoindulgente. Cristo no se está refiriendo a un tipo egocéntrico egocéntrico de amor propio que nuestro mundo a menudo señala como la búsqueda de mi tiempo y placer o comodidad. Cristo, en cambio, se refiere a darnos cuenta de que somos amables, que hay dignidad en nosotros, ya que hemos sido creados para ser como Dios a Su imagen. Por lo tanto, debemos darnos cuenta de que Dios nos ama y no comete errores. Así como somos amados, amaremos a los demás.
