In today's Gospel Jesus tells us that we will be seized and persecuted. When this happens He tells us that we will have to give our testimony, "Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand, for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute." At first glance we might find that thought comforting. Well not the part about being seized and persecuted but rather that part about not having to prepare a defense. It is like in school when the teacher said it would be an open book test. But the reason Jesus asks us not to prepare a defense is that it is Jesus Himself who is the answer and not us. There is no rational argument that will convince someone who does not believe in Him. The amazing defense that our enemies are powerless to refute is the self sacrifice of Jesus. The Lord of lords and King of kings, who was present at the creation of the world, permits Himself to suffer and die paying the ransom for our sins. This harrowing act of selflessness is irrefutable evidence that Jesus is focused on that which this world can never give us. Therefore it is very likely that the wise argument that He will give us will be reinforced by the sacrificial cross that we accept just as He did. After all he does go on to say that they will put some of us to death and also says that by our perseverance we will preserve our lives. Something tells me that this final argument that Jesus has give will involve our taking up our cross and following after Him. ............................................................................................................................................................. Pero la razón por la que Jesús nos pide que no preparemos una defensa es que es Jesús mismo quien es la respuesta y no nosotros. No hay ningún argumento racional que convenza a alguien que no cree en él. La asombrosa defensa que nuestros enemigos son impotentes para refutar es el autosacrificio de Jesús. El Señor de señores y Rey de reyes, que estuvo presente en la creación del mundo, se permite sufrir y morir pagando el rescate por nuestros pecados. Este desgarrador acto de abnegación es una evidencia irrefutable de que Jesús está enfocado en lo que este mundo nunca nos puede dar. Por tanto, es muy probable que el sabio argumento que nos dará se verá reforzado por la cruz de sacrificio que aceptamos tal como Él lo hizo. Después de todo, continúa diciendo que a algunos de nosotros nos matarán y también dice que "Si se mantienen firmes, conseguirán la vida". Algo me dice que este último argumento que Jesús ha dado implicará que tomemos nuestra cruz y lo sigamos.
