It is easy for us to forget that Obedience is a virtue. Our Lord tells us today in the Gospel, "The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example." This is followed by 3 examples of things the Pharisees do that are not right. They preach but do not practice. They do not help people to endure the difficult things they tell them to do. Finally they do pious acts less out of love for God and more to be seen by others. Three things that he tells us not do, But more important than what not to do is what Jesus is asking us to do. He tells us, despite this that we should obey the Pharisees. Since they receive their authority legitimately from the line of Moses, it would be disobedient to dismiss their teachings on the law, but that we should be wary of the example they give us. Obedience seems to be a lost virtue. St. Francis de Sales reminds us that "the devil does not fear austerity but holy obedience." The long and the short of it is that if we are asked by a legitimate authority to do something and it is not immoral then we should be obedient, whether we like it or not, want to or not, agree with it or not. "Oh! how sweet and glorious is the virtue of obedience, by which all other virtues exist, because it is the offspring of charity! On it is founded the rock of faith; it is a queen, whom he that espouses is rich in every kind of good and whom no evil can assail." - St. Catherine of Siena ............................................................................................................................................................. Por tanto, haz y observa todo lo que te digan, pero no sigas su ejemplo". A esto le siguen 3 ejemplos de cosas que los fariseos hacen que no están bien. Predican pero no practican. No ayudan a las personas a soportar las cosas difíciles que les dicen que hagan. Finalmente, hacen actos piadosos menos por amor a Dios y más para ser vistos por otros. Tres cosas que él nos dice que no hagamos, pero más importante que lo que no debemos hacer es lo que Jesús nos pide que hagamos. Él nos dice, a pesar de esto, que debemos obedecer a los fariseos. Dado que reciben su autoridad legítimamente de la línea de Moisés, sería desobediente rechazar sus enseñanzas sobre la ley, pero debemos tener cuidado con el ejemplo que nos dan.
