Today is the feast day of the First Martyrs of Rome, They are the Christians who lived in Rome during the time of St. Peter adn St. Paul. A great persecution rose in the city and the Emperor Nero began the systematic killing of all Christians. Though there had been incidents of Martyrdom and even small persecutions that occurred prior to this it was on a very small scale and was only very localized. This persecution was far more wide spread and systematic. We know there were many Christians who were able to flee from Rome and those who had to remain did so in hiding and seclusion. They would gather in the interior rooms of houses or on rooftops to avoid detection when gathering for prayer adn eventually the Catacombs became a shrine to their holy deaths as well as a secret place of prayer and worship.These brave men and women risked their lives to receive communion, to go to mass and to practice their faith. ............................................................................................................................................................. Hoy es el día de la fiesta de los primeros mártires de Roma. Son los cristianos que vivieron en Roma durante la época de San Pedro y San Pablo. Se produjo una gran persecución en la ciudad y el emperador Nerón comenzó el asesinato sistemático de todos los cristianos.
