In Deuteronomy today we encounter this moment when Moses enters into a covenant with God on behalf of all of humanity. 3 times Moses tells the people that our responsibility is to observe God's commandments. Repetition is way of indicating superlatives in Hebrew. If someone is the tallest man on earth, in Hebrew you would repeat the word "tall" 3 times. He is tall, tall, tall. If God is the holiest, you would repeat "holy" 3 times, like when we sing Holy, Holy, Holy during the Mass. By 3 times repeating the need for us to observe God's commandments, Moses is exhorting Israel to the absolute necessity of observing these commandments. Jesus essentially is exhorting us similarly but takes the lesson one step further by reminding us that we are to observe these commandments in all situations, be attentive to how you treat all people. Like God who loves indiscriminately we too must show love to every single person. ............................................................................................................................................................. En Deuteronomio hoy nos encontramos con este momento cuando Moisés entra en un pacto con Dios en nombre de toda la humanidad. 3 veces Moisés le dice al pueblo que nuestra responsabilidad es observar los mandamientos de Dios. La repetición es una forma de indicar superlativos en hebreo. Si alguien es el hombre más alto de la tierra, en hebreo repetirías la palabra "alto" 3 veces. Es alto, alto, alto. Si Dios es el más santo, repetirías "santo" 3 veces, como cuando cantamos Santo, Santo, Santo durante la Misa. Al repetir 3 veces la necesidad de que observemos los mandamientos de Dios, Moisés está exhortando a Israel a la absoluta necesidad de observando estos mandamientos. Jesús esencialmente nos está exhortando de manera similar, pero lleva la lección un paso más allá al recordarnos que debemos observar estos mandamientos en todas las situaciones, estar atentos a cómo tratas a todas las personas. Como Dios que ama indiscriminadamente, nosotros también debemos mostrar amor a cada persona.

"If you, O Lord, mark iniquities, who can stand?" We are all sinners. None of us could stand before God and say that we are perfect. Therefore it is not God's goal that we are perfect. It is God's goal that if we fall we turn back to Him. Again and again, we seek His forgiveness and try to do the good. "Do I indeed derive any pleasure from the death of the wicked? says the Lord GOD. Do I not rather rejoice when he turns from his evil way that he may live?" ............................................................................................................................................................. "Si conservaras el recuerdo de las culpas, ¿quién habría, Señor, que se salvara?" Todos somos pecadores. Ninguno de nosotros podría pararse ante Dios y decir que somos perfectos. Por lo tanto, la meta de Dios no es que seamos perfectos. La meta de Dios es que si caemos nos volvamos a Él. Una y otra vez, buscamos Su perdón y tratamos de hacer el bien. "¿Acaso quiero yo la muerte del pecador, dice el Señor, y no más bien que enmiende su conducta y viva?"

e of those wonderful books of the bible that reads like a story and filled with important lessons. Once it is clear to her that her, her family and her people are in mortal peril, she knows that she must act. God had uniquely positioned her to be the only one who could effectively intercede with the king. As soon as she knew that she must act, she did 4 interesting things. 1) She started a fast, to prepare herself for this difficult task. 2) She invited others to fast as well and pray to God for the success of this mission. 3) She abandoned herself completely to the will of God and entrusted the cause to God. This is the prayer we heard in our first reading today. 4) She then boldly got dressed and went to speak with the King trusting that God would guide the whole affair. 1) Fasting, 2) Communal Sacrifice, 3) Abandonment to God, 4) Bold Selfless Action. Jesus tells us today in the Gospel, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." ............................................................................................................................................................. Ester es uno de esos maravillosos libros de la Biblia que se lee como una historia y está lleno de lecciones importantes. Una vez que tiene claro que ella, su familia y su pueblo están en peligro mortal, sabe que debe actuar. Dios la había posicionado de manera única para ser la única que podía interceder efectivamente ante el rey. Tan pronto como supo que debía actuar, hizo 4 cosas interesantes. 1) Ella comenzó un ayuno, para prepararse para esta difícil tarea. 2) Invitó a otros a ayunar también y orar a Dios por el éxito de esta misión. 3) Se abandonó por completo a la voluntad de Dios y encomendó la causa a Dios. Esta es la oración que escuchamos en nuestra primera lectura de hoy. 4) Entonces se vistió con audacia y fue a hablar con el Rey confiando en que Dios guiaría todo el asunto. 1) Ayuno, 2) Sacrificio comunitario, 3) Abandono en Dios, 4) Acción audaz y desinteresada. Jesús nos dice hoy en el Evangelio: "Pidan y se les dará; busquen y encontrarán; toquen y se les abrirá. Porque todo el que pide, recibe; el que busca, encuentra; y al que toca, se le abre".

Imagine that you lived in Nineveh at the time of Jonah the prophet. Imagine this seemingly crazy guy that smelled horribly like fish guts and looked gross and disheveled walking through the streets yelling “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed.” How do you think that you would have reacted to this scene? Would you have been dismissive, calling him a crazy person? Would you have ignored him and returned to your daily work or would you have been concerned. If you like the rest of the Ninevites did believe him and started the radical fasting in repentance for your sin and others and received the amazing reprieve from god, then what? How would you live differently over the coming 40 days? Conversion does not simply happen once but happens daily as we again and again turn away from the empty promises of the evil one and turn anew to the truth of the Gospel. ............................................................................................................................................................. Imagínese que vivía en Nínive en la época del profeta Jonás. Imagínense a este tipo aparentemente loco que olía horriblemente a tripas de pescado y se veía asqueroso y despeinado caminando por las calles gritando "Cuarenta días más y Nínive será destruida". ¿Cómo crees que habrías reaccionado a esta escena? ¿Habría sido despectivo, llamándolo loco? ¿Lo habría ignorado y habría regresado a su trabajo diario o se habría preocupado? Si le gusta que el resto de los ninivitas le creyó y comenzó el ayuno radical en arrepentimiento por su pecado y por otros y recibió el asombroso indulto de Dios, ¿entonces qué? ¿Cómo viviría de manera diferente durante los próximos 40 días? La conversión no ocurre simplemente una vez, sino que ocurre todos los días cuando una y otra vez nos alejamos de las promesas vacías del maligno y nos volvemos a la verdad del Evangelio.

How many times have we prayed, "and lead us not into temptation" but does God really do this to us? Does God tempt us or cause us temptation. The simple answer answer is NO. The Catechism indicates, the petition means more "do not allow us to enter into temptation" or "do not let us yield to temptation" (No. 2846). We are asking God to ensure that we are not tempted or help us so that we do not succumb to temptation. Therefore, we understand the petition in the sense of God giving us the grace to recognize and resist temptation. We must realize that our human efforts are not sufficient to face all the temptations surrounding our daily lives. We need divine assistance to lead a holy life. ............................................................................................................................................................. ¿Cuántas veces hemos orado, "y no nos dejes caer en tentación." Dios no nos tienta y no nos provoca la tentación. Estamos pidiendo a Dios que se asegure de que no seamos tentados o que nos ayude para que no sucumbamos a la tentación. Por tanto, entendemos la petición en el sentido de que Dios nos da la gracia de reconocer y resistir la tentación. Debemos darnos cuenta de que nuestros esfuerzos humanos no son suficientes para enfrentar todas las tentaciones que rodean nuestra vida diaria. Necesitamos la ayuda divina para llevar una vida santa.

Leviticus 19:18 "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." There does not seem to be a more simple statement than this; yet we fail in complying with it. So Jesus, in today's Gospel, makes it even more poignant. "Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me." and the alternative is true, "what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me." The first group is considered righteous for showing love of neighbor and the later was condemned as being accursed. How we treat one another matters, and not just our friends or family or those whose company we "enjoy". How we treat everyone is what matters. ............................................................................................................................................................. Levítico 19:18 "Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo". No parece haber una declaración más simple que esta; sin embargo, fallamos en cumplirlo. Así que Jesús, en el Evangelio de hoy, lo hace aún más conmovedor. “En verdad os digo que todo lo que hicisteis por uno de estos mis hermanos más pequeños, por mí lo hicisteis”. y la alternativa es verdadera, "lo que no hiciste por uno de estos más pequeños, no lo hiciste por mí". El primer grupo es considerado justo por mostrar amor al prójimo y el segundo fue condenado como maldito. La forma en que nos tratamos unos a otros importa, y no solo a nuestros amigos o familiares o a aquellos cuya compañía "disfrutamos". Cómo tratamos a todos es lo que importa.

The three temptations of Christ in the desert are an important lesson to each of us. The first was a temptation to comfort, food, This is tempting Jesus with things of the flesh. The second was a temptation with the world. Jesus is tempted by the world as an ultimate goal or end. The third was the temptation of pride. Jesus was tempted to forgo the timing God had planned and reveal Himself here and now. Interestingly these each also symbolize for us the subtle ways in which the devil uses temptation. The first temptation was not to do anything sinful, but rather to simply stop doing a good , namely fasting. The second temptation seems at first glance to be easy to resist, but in reality it was a temptation to false humility. If Jesus would only humble himself just a little more, by "acknowledging" the devil, then the devil would join Him and cooperate with Him. What is just one more humble sacrifice to achieve this great good? The third temptation invites Jesus to be recognized as the God that He is, to no longer be hidden away and come out to the light in a spectacular way. Finally it is also worth noting that Jesus overcomes these temptations by obedience to God's Word. Where Adam and Eve failed to heed God's word, Jesus obeys the Word of God. ............................................................................................................................................................. Las tres tentaciones de Cristo en el desierto son una lección importante para cada uno de nosotros. La primera fue una tentación de consuelo, comida, esto es tentar a Jesús con cosas de la carne. La segunda fue una tentación con el mundo. Jesús es tentado por el mundo como meta o fin último. La tercera fue la tentación del orgullo. Jesús fue tentado a renunciar al tiempo que Dios había planeado y revelarse aquí y ahora. Curiosamente, cada uno de estos también simboliza para nosotros las formas sutiles en que el diablo usa la tentación. La primera tentación fue no hacer nada pecaminoso, sino simplemente dejar de hacer un bien, es decir, ayunar. La segunda tentación parece a primera vista fácil de resistir, pero en realidad era una tentación a la falsa humildad. Si Jesús tan solo se humillara un poco más, "reconociendo" al diablo, entonces el diablo se uniría a Él y cooperaría con Él. ¿Qué es sólo un humilde sacrificio más para lograr este gran bien? La tercera tentación invita a Jesús a ser reconocido como el Dios que es, a no estar más escondido y salir a la luz de manera espectacular. Finalmente, también vale la pena señalar que Jesús vence estas tentaciones por la obediencia a la Palabra de Dios. Donde Adán y Eva fallaron en prestar atención a la palabra de Dios, Jesús obedece la Palabra de Dios.

They shall call you, “Repairer of the breach" and “Restorer of ruined homesteads.” Wow... now those are some awesome titles. These are the blessings that the Lord promises to give His people if only they would be faithful to God. If they change their ways from evil to good, practice fasting, prayer and acts of charity, keep holy the Sabbath and be devoted to God; they will obtain blessing not only for themselves but for others as well. They will be part of the solution that brings society back to God and brings His grace and blessing upon others. We too be Repairers and Restorers to the people of God. ............................................................................................................................................................. Te llamarán "Reparador de brechas" y "Restaurador de hogares derruidos". Wow... ahora esos son algunos títulos impresionantes. Estas son las bendiciones que el Señor promete dar a su pueblo si tan solo son fieles a Dios. Si cambian sus caminos del mal al bien, practican el ayuno, la oración y los actos de caridad. , santifiquen el día de reposo y sean devotos de Dios, obtendrán bendición no solo para ellos sino también para los demás, serán parte de la solución que lleve a la sociedad de regreso a Dios y lleve su gracia y bendición a los demás. Así que si oras, ayuna; si ayunas, muestra misericordia; si quieres que tu petición sea escuchada, escucha la petición de los demás. "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me." Jesus speaks plainly. Being with me is not what you think it is going to be. The first step, He says, is to deny yourself. The desire to be with Christ cannot be about ourselves. It must be about Jesus. In fact the next line makes it clear that not only do we deny ourselves, but we also must embrace the cross. Life in Christ is about being spent, drained out, losing oneself completely or using yourself up for the good of others. He says this when He says that we are to take up our cross... and to do this daily! This is not intended to be a one time act that is over and done but rather an ongoing suffering and loss of self that must be renewed every single day. Already this is enough to make most of us second guess what in the world we were ever thinking when we considered following Christ. There is nothing endearing about the Cross of Christ. It is physically, emotionally and most of all spiritually torturous. So why in the world would anyone in their right mind follow after Christ? Because He did it first for us. "In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins." 1 John 4:10. Why follow Christ?... because of how perfectly He laid down His life for us. Thus we respond to perfect love by striving to imitate it, and laying down our lives for Him. ............................................................................................................................................................. "Si alguno quiere acompañarme, que no se busque a sí mismo, que tome su cruz de cada día y me siga". Jesús habla claramente. Estar conmigo no es lo que crees que va a ser. El primer paso, dice, es negarse a sí mismo. El deseo de estar con Cristo no puede ser acerca de nosotros mismos. Debe ser sobre Jesús. De hecho, la siguiente línea deja en claro que no solo nos negamos a nosotros mismos, sino que también debemos abrazar la cruz. La vida en Cristo se trata de gastarse, agotarse, perderse por completo o gastarse para el bien de los demás. Él dice esto cuando dice que debemos tomar nuestra cruz... ¡y hacer esto diariamente! Esto no tiene la intención de ser un acto de una sola vez que se acabó y se hace, sino más bien un sufrimiento continuo y una pérdida de uno mismo que debe renovarse todos los días. Esto ya es suficiente para hacer que la mayoría de nosotros adivine en qué diablos estábamos pensando cuando consideramos seguir a Cristo. No hay nada entrañable en la Cruz de Cristo. Es una tortura física, emocional y, sobre todo, espiritual. Entonces, ¿por qué en el mundo alguien en su sano juicio seguiría a Cristo? Porque Él lo hizo primero por nosotros. “En esto consiste el amor: no en que nosotros hayamos amado a Dios, sino en que Él nos amó y envió a su Hijo como expiación por nuestros pecados”. 1 Juan 4:10. ¿Por qué seguir a Cristo?... por la perfección con que Él dio Su vida por nosotros. Así respondemos al amor perfecto esforzándonos por imitarlo y entregando nuestras vidas por Él.
